Love’s Quartet

I

In the silence of the night

Long before the sun will rise

I peer into the darkness

And imagine that

my essence, my awareness

my soul

Lighter than the stardust

it is clothed in

Rises above

The twisted bed sheets

Into the night sky

In search of

you.

II

On bended knee

I thank all of the powers that be

For what seems like an eternity

Spent in love’s certainty

That when all else failed

We had each other.

III

Alone now

By all accounts

Making my way

As best one could

What they don’t know

Is that the smile upon my face

Is lit by the memories

Of your soft lips on mine

In a warm embrace

As we dance to the beat

Of a song from our early days

IV

So many yesterdays

So few tomorrows

I slow my breathing

To live in the present
