There was a time, there was a time,
It seems just moments away.
But it’s been half a century
Since we kissed on Valentine’s Day.
Not sure what you saw in me,
Other than a ragtag survivor of the sixties.
What I saw in you—and still see when I close my eyes—
Is an angel with a devilish smile,
And eyes that sent me into a trance
From which I’ve just awoken.
You moved with grace,
More dance than walk.
Heads turned to follow,
With your back straight as an arrow,
Carrying the weight of your past
With a lightness that belied any sorrows.
Your laughter—my reason for being—
Echoes in my daydreams.
Your touch, a promise,
Guided me through hellfire
To victories over battles
I thought I’d surely lost.
Together, there was nothing we couldn’t dream and do.
Together, there was nothing we couldn’t battle through.
There was a time, there was a time,
And now it’s over.
